A luggage tag for a guest on one of IBM’s 1940 trips to the New York World’s Fair, made from a punch card and tied on through its reinforced hole. The year before, Thomas Watson had famously brought about 10,000 IBM employees and guests to the fair, many on chartered Erie Railroad trains from the factories in Endicott, New York. The tag’s schedule had its guest leave Endicott on a Saturday morning and return Monday night, staying at the Hotel Pennsylvania. It’s marked “licensed for use under patent 1,772,492,” Clair D. Lake’s 1930 IBM patent for the rectangular-hole card.
